Heather McNeil leading a storytelling workshop

Storytime & Early Literacy Workshops

A storytelling workshop with Heather McNeil helps librarians, teachers, and parents turn storytime into something children remember. Drawing on forty years as a children’s librarian and a Master Trainer in early literacy, Heather shows you how to use the art of storytelling and read-aloud in the classroom and library to build the skills a young child needs to be ready to read. Choose the storytime focus, the early literacy focus, or a blend of both.

Storytime Workshops

Storytime, week after week, can be draining. You’ll find the answers to all these questions, and more, at my Workshops.

  • What can you do to liven it up?
  • How can you read aloud with expression, interpretive voices, and appropriate pacing?
  • What are ways to encourage participation from the listeners without losing control?
  • What techniques keep the attention of caregivers and help to avoid interruptions?
  • What are the best books to promote social emotional learning, diversity, and early literacy skills?
  • How important is it to have an established format to storytime? (Hint: VERY!)

Early Literacy Workshops

If you prefer to focus just on early literacy, I will lead a workshop that covers:

  • The six skills a child needs in order to be ready to read.
  • The five activities that help to build those skills.
  • A bit of data and a bit on brain development.
  • Creative songs, rhymes, games and crafts that promote early literacy.
  • Discussion about other community organizations who promote early literacy and how you can partner.
  • Opportunities to share and discover some of the amazing books that promote early literacy.

Fee Information

My fee for workshops is $300–$500, depending on the length, and how much original preparation is needed. I also require travel expenses and lodging.
